Michael Otto Scheffler (born July 25, 1954 in Letmathe , now Iserlohn's district ) is a German SPD politician .

education and profession

After completing secondary school, Michael Scheffler began training as an industrial clerk in 1970, which he completed in 1973. From 1975 to 1987 he worked as a clerk. From April 1987 to January 1994 he was managing director of the district association of Hagen der Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO). In March 1993 he also took over the provisional management of the AWO district association Märkischer Kreis. From January 1994 to August 1995 he acted as managing director of the AWO sub-district Hagen-Märkischer Kreis.

When he left the state parliament after the state elections in 2005, he returned to the AWO and worked as managing director of the AWO sub-district Westmünsterland and as acting managing director of the sub-district Münster-Steinfurt. He later became a project manager at the AWO district association of Western Westphalia; since June 2012 he has been chairman of the AWO district association for Western Westphalia. Since November 2012 he has been Deputy Chairman of the AWO Federal Presidium. Since January 1, 2018, he has also been chairman of the AWO in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Scheffler is married and has three children.

Scheffler has been a member of the SPD since 1971. From 1983 to 1990 he was chairman of the SPD city association Iserlohn. He was chairman of the SPD sub-district Märkischer Kreis from 1990 to November 2016. Now he is honorary chairman of the SPD in the Märkischer Kreis. For his commitment he was honored with the Willy Brandt Medal , the highest honor of the SPD. From 1975 to 1984 he was an expert citizen of the city of Iserlohn and the Märkisches Kreis. Scheffler has been a member of the Iserlohn City Council since 1984. From 1984 to 1989 he was Iserlohn's second deputy mayor, which he has been again since November 1994. In addition, he was deputy group chairman from 1989 to 1994.

Scheffler was a directly elected member of the 12th and 13th state parliaments of North Rhine-Westphalia from 1995 to 2005 . From 2000 to 2005 he was the social policy spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group and was again from 2010 to 2017.

For the Märkischer Kreis I he was a member of the 15th state parliament from June 9, 2010 to 2012 . He won his constituency again on May 13, 2012 as a direct candidate and was a member of the 16th state parliament . In the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2017 , he lost the direct mandate to the Christian Democrat Torsten Schick , who had already represented the constituency in the state parliament from 2005 to 2010.
