Michael William Eric Tonge (born April 7, 1983 in Manchester ) is an English football player who plays in midfield and was most recently under contract with Leeds United .
Career
Sheffield United
Tonge played in various youth teams from Manchester United until he was brought to Sheffield United by Steve Bruce . In April 2001 Tonge was in the first team for the first time. Tonge made his starting line-up debut in the 1-1 draw against Bolton Wanderers . He scored his first competitive goal the following season when he scored the 1-0 winner against Crewe Alexandra . Due to good performances Tonge aroused the interest of numerous top clubs including Liverpool FC , especially after Tonge scored both goals in the semi-finals of the League Cup to win 2-1. After all, he was appointed to the English youth national team for the first time. In eight years at Sheffield Tonge played over 300 competitive games.
Stoke City
On September 1, 2008 Tonge signed a contract with first division club Stoke City. It premiered against Everton on September 14th. Nevertheless, he did not succeed in asserting himself permanently in the team, which is why he only made ten league appearances. On November 19, 2009 he was awarded to Preston North End , where he was first used on November 23 against Newcastle United . In the second half of the season Tonge was awarded to Derby County , where he scored his first goal on March 6, 2010 against Watford FC . After returning to Stoke City, Tonge made two appearances earlier in the season. Nevertheless, he was awarded a short time later again to Preston, where he was able to score his first goal on December 4, 2010 against Cardiff City .
In the 2012/13 season, his former coach Neil Warnock became aware of him from common Sheffield times. He was able to arrange a loan deal with Stoke, so that Tongue can now contribute to Leeds United FC 's goal of the season, promotion to the top division. In the winter of 2013, the loan business was expanded into a permanent contract.
