Michael W. Bauer

Michael W. Bauer (born August 16, 1969 in Mannheim ) is a German political and administrative scientist. He is a professor at the German University for Administrative Sciences in Speyer .

Scientific career

Michael Bauer studied social sciences, German philology and modern German history from 1990 to 1996 at the Universities of Mannheim, Frankfurt am Main, Vienna and Berlin. He graduated from the Humboldt University of Berlin with a degree in social science in 1996 . 1996–1997 he completed the Master of Arts in European Politics and Administrative Sciences at the renowned College of Europe in Bruges . From 1997 to 2000 Michael Bauer did his doctorate at the European University Institute in Florence under Adrienne Héritier with a thesis on the implementation of EU structural policy.

After working as a research assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods in Bonn and as a consultant for fundamental questions of European unification in the European department of the Hessian State Chancellery , Michael Bauer was a research assistant to Christoph Knill at the chair for comparative policy research from 2004 to 2009 and Public administration of the Department of politics and Public administration of the University of Konstanz . He completed his habilitation there in 2008 and received the venia legendi for political and administrative science.

In 2009, Bauer accepted the position of Professor of Politics and Administration (successor to Hellmut Wollmann ) at the Institute for Social Sciences at the Humboldt University in Berlin. After appointments to the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel , the University of Konstanz and the University of Potsdam , Bauer switched to a professorship for comparative administrative science and policy analysis at the German University of Administrative Sciences Speyer in 2012. For his teaching and research commitment in the field of European unification, he was awarded the status of Jean Monnet Professor by the European Union in 2013 . Michael Bauer also teaches as a visiting professor at the Universidade A Coruña , at the Instituto Superior De Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa (ISCTE) of the Instituto Universitário de Lisboa and at the Turkish-German University of Istanbul .

His main research interests are in comparative administrative science and EU policy analysis, with a particular focus on questions of EU administration, international bureaucracies and governance in multi-level systems.

Michael W. Bauer is a member of the editorial boards of various national and international journals such as the International Journal of Public Administration , Public Policy and Administration , West European Politics and the modern state .
