Johann Michael Waginger (* 1642 ; † 1713 ) was a Baroque painter .

Life

Waginger came from Kufstein . He often worked with the church sculptor Johann Michael Mayr and the altar carpenter Georg Lengerer .

Works

There are two paintings by Waginger in the chapel of the Thierberg ruins . One shows the dance of Salome and the beheading of St. John. This picture dates from 1702. Ten years younger is an oil painting that depicts the story of Margarete von Henneberg in two scenes. On the left you can see the noblewoman offending a mother with several children, on the right the punishment: According to a legend, Margarete von Henneberg is said to have given birth to 364 or 365 children at once who were baptized in a large vessel. This baptism can be seen on the right side of the picture.

In the branch church of St. Leonhard in Aschau in the Zillertal there is a high altar from 1704, the pictures of which are attributed to Michael Waginger.

The frescoes in the parish church of St. Petrus in Breitenbach am Inn may also come from him.

The pictures of the high altar of the Antonius Chapel in Bad Häring are also by Waginger. They are likely to have been made around 1708.

An eight-part cycle of pictures on the work of Antonius of Padua dates from around 1709 . It shows several healings from the sick as well as a depiction of outcast persons affected by leprosy and other ailments.
