Michael Weber (border victim)

Michael Weber (born December 5, 1969 in Leipzig ; † July 6, 1989 near Novo Chodschowo, now part of the Sandanski community , Bulgaria ) was a fatality on the Bulgarian-Greek border.

Life

The high school graduate who lived in Leipzig wanted to flee the GDR via Bulgaria and was shot by Bulgarian border soldiers on July 6, 1989 before crossing the border between Bulgaria and Greece in the Blagoewgrad Oblast, about one kilometer from the border. He is considered to be the last GDR refugee killed in Bulgaria.

According to the autopsy report, the shot was fired from a distance of 1.50 to 2 meters. The bullet penetrated the left side of his face, neck, and chest and got stuck in the back below the right armpit. The zygomatic bone, the upper jaw and two cervical vertebrae were smashed. The thoracic aorta and right lung were torn from the gunshot.

A case brought by the mother in Bulgaria against the shooter ended without conviction of the shooter.
