Wilhelm Madelung

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilhelm Madelung (* 1774 ; † 1855 ) was a German banker and entrepreneur in Gotha .

Life

The Madelung family came from Madelungen near Eisenach . Wilhelm Madelung grew up in Gotha as the son of the local merchant and senator Johann August Wilhelm Madelung (1749–1822) and his wife Dorothea, b. Mevius, in Gotha. His younger siblings were the later Privy Councilor and official advocate Karl Ernst August Madelung (1776–1849) and Johanna Friederike Madelung (1779–1859). The family was one of the richest in the city of Gotha and owned, among other things, the bank "Madelung & Sons" and the "Gothaische Zeitung" .

After his father's death in 1822, Wilhelm took over management of the bank. He was also the director of Gothaer Feuerversicherung, founded by Ernst Wilhelm Arnoldi in 1820, and on the revision committee of the first German life insurance company founded in 1827 . He was in close contact with Duke Ernst I , to whom he presented a poem of homage when he took office in 1826 together with the insurance salesman Ernst-Wilhelm Arnoldi . Friedrich Christoph Perthes , whose daughter had married Madelung's son Moritz in 1831, referred to Madelung & Sons as "his bankers" in 1836 .

The now demolished Villa Madelung around 1996

From 1836 to 1837, Wilhelm Madelung had the court architect Gustav Eberhard built a spacious house, the Villa Madelung , for his family .

After the great fire in Hamburg in 1842, Madelung immediately traveled to Hamburg to personally take care of the claims settlement of the houses insured by Gothaer fire insurance. He had 250,000 thalers sent to Hamburg immediately. With a total of 1,392,580 thalers, some of which was raised by a one-off additional payment by bank members, he was able to achieve full settlement by July 27, 1842, thus making a significant contribution to the good reputation of Gothaer Versicherung. His brother, Hofrat Karl Ernst, who, together with 5 other Gotha dignitaries, also looked for help for Hamburg by appealing for donations, was awarded the Saxon-Ernestine Cross of Merit by Ernst II (Saxe-Coburg and Gotha) on October 25, 1847 .

Trivia

As a student at the grammar school in Gotha, Wilhelm Madelung fell victim to a catheter bloom from the grammar school director Galletti :

"There is another restless person sitting there, but I don't want to name him, his name is Madelung with the first letter."

- Gallettiana, No. 375
