Career

The midfielder Michael Wirtz began his career at VfB Schinkel and came to VfL Osnabrück's A-youth team in 1982 through TuS Haste 01 and Osnabrücker SC . A year later, Wirtz led his team to the Lower Saxony championship as team captain . After the summer break, Wirtz moved up to the professional squad and made his debut in the 2nd Bundesliga on August 13, 1983 in the 1-0 win of Osnabrück against Rot-Weiss Essen . In 16 second division games, he scored three goals, but could not prevent the relegation of his team.

Wirtz then joined VfB Oldenburg and was runner-up in the Oberliga Nord in 1986 with his team . In the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga, however, VfB failed at FC St. Pauli and Rot-Weiss Essen. Then Wirtz returned to his homeland to Eintracht Osnabrück and in 1987 moved to Spvg Versmold in the Landesliga Westfalen . Five years later, Wirtz went back to VfL Osnabrück and strengthened the amateur team. On November 28, 1992 there was another comeback in the 2nd Bundesliga. At the end of the season, VfL was relegated.

From 1995 to 1997 he let his active career end with Sportfreunde Oesede . He then began a career as a football coach and looked after the amateur clubs Viktoria Georgsmarienhütte, TuS Haste 01, VfL Kloster Oesede and SSC Dodesheide .
