Michael Wittlich

Michael Wittlich (born September 29 . Jul / 11. October  1866 greg. In Kunda , Governorate of Estonia ; † 6. February 1933 in Tartu ) was an Estonian chemist . He is particularly known for his work on oil shale .

Early years

Michael Wittlich (Estonian name: Mihkel Vitsut ) attended the district school of Rakvere and the secondary school in Tallinn . From 1885 he studied chemistry at the Riga Polytechnic and completed his studies in 1890. From 1890 to 1901 he worked in the dairy industry, then as an engineer at the Estonian Agricultural Association.

From 1909 onwards Wittlich was employed as a research assistant at the Polytechnic Institute in Riga, from 1910 as a full professor and later as dean of the Faculty of Chemistry. From 1919 to 1932 Michael Wittlich was Professor of Chemistry at the University of Tartu , from 1920 to 1925 as Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Even after his retirement he continued to work as a lecturer in Tartu.

Appreciation

His research focused on sugar production and fermentation technology . Wittlich is best known for his work on the use of local energy sources, especially peat and oil shale. Together with the Estonian scientist Paul Kogerman , he founded a laboratory in Tartu in 1925 to research the properties of oil shale. Wittlich is also the author of the first Estonian textbook for chemistry ( Valitud peatükid tehnoloogiast , Tartu 1927).

Michael Wittlich is buried in the Vana-Jaani cemetery in Tartu.
