Michael Wolgensinger

Michael Wolgensinger (born September 17, 1913 in Zurich ; † January 9, 1990 there ; entitled to live in Zurich and Mosnang ) was a Swiss photographer and reporter.

life and work

Wolgensinger grew up in Zurich. After graduating from business school in Neuchâtel , he trained as a photographer at Atelier Meiner in Zurich. Then he was an intern in the newly founded photography class at the Zurich School of Applied Arts. His teacher is Hans Finsler . Here he met Werner Bischof and his future wife Luzzi Herzog.

In 1935 he founded his own studio in Zurich and worked, among other things, for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung at the Paris World Exhibition and for the 1939 Swiss National Exhibition in Zurich. Between 1942 and 1944 Robert Frank trained in Wolgensinger's studio. In the fifties he made various films and worked on his own book projects on the subjects of Spain, Italy, India, Thailand, Nepal, theater photography, architecture and industrial photography. For his travel books he worked with Michael Rudolf Wening. In 1965 he received the Zurich Film Prize for the film Schleifen . He made other films, including about Gottfried Keller .

In December 2019 a monograph will be published by the Zurich publishing house Scheidegger & Spiess . The monograph, edited by their daughter Lea Wolgensinger and her grandson Balz Strasser, presents Michael and Luzzi Wolgensinger's collaboration for the first time comprehensively and with many previously unpublished images. In addition to an introduction by Guido Magnaguagno, the art historian Katharina Lang presents the work in thematic chapters. Lea Wolgensinger gives an insight into atelier and family life.
