After completing his studies, he first worked as a research assistant at the Department of Materials Handling and Warehousing at the University of Dortmund before moving to the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics in 1987, where he worked until 1989.

In 1988 he founded GamBit GmbH (today Vanderlande Industries Logistik Software GmbH) in Dortmund, of which he remained managing partner until 2000. He received his doctorate in 1991 from the University of Witten / Herdecke . Since 2000 he has been full professor of the Department of Materials Handling and Storage at the Technical University of Dortmund and director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics, of which he took over management in 2004.

His work focuses on the planning of logistics systems, logistics software, warehouse management, identification technology and the development of material flow systems. He is considered to be one of the fathers of the " Internet of Things " and was instrumental in the development of "Shuttle Technology" and "Cellular Intralogistics ". In 2010 he initiated the BMBF top cluster “EfficiencyCluster LogistikRuhr” with 120 member companies and 11 research institutions and played a key role in founding the “LogistikCampus”, an interdisciplinary research center for logistics and supply chain management at TU Dortmund University.
