For peace negotiations Michael traveled in 806 on behalf of Emperor Nikephorus I to the Caliph Hārūn ar-Raschīd, in 811 then on behalf of Emperor Michael I Rhangabes to the court of Charlemagne, where Michael Pope Leo III. the synodicon of the Patriarch of Constantinople, Nikephorus I , brought.

However, under Emperor Leo V, who initiated the second phase of the Byzantine Iconoclasm in 815 , he was banished. He died after long persecution and multiple stalkings on May 23, 826. The Menologion in the edition of Alexios von Maltzew gives the year 818 as the year of death.

Adoration

The troparion , which is sung in his honor on his memorial day, refers to his posture during the pictorial argument:

“As an all-honored high priest and sufferer consecrated to piety, you have defeated the heretic resistance of the same without fear of the prohibition of the wrongdoer, calling out in a free and loud voice: I worship the image of Christ and his all pure mother! That is why we adore you, oh Michael! "

Relics of the saint are in the monasteries of Megisti Lavra and Iviron on Mount Athos.
