Michaela Moua

Michaela Moua (born August 18, 1976 in Helsinki ) is a former Finnish basketball player . She has been the European Union's first anti-racism officer since May 17, 2021 .

Life

Athletic career

The daughter of a Finn and an Ivorian began her career in 1992 at the age of 16 with the club Pussihukat in the city of Vantaa, north of Helsinki . In the same year she immediately became a national player for the Finnish women's team. Equipped with a scholarship, she studied international relations at Ohio State University from 1996 and was the first foreigner to play for the college's basketball team, the Ohio State Buckeyes. At times she was the top scorer of her team. In 2000 she returned to Europe and initially joined the ESB Villeneuve-d'Ascq in France . Further stations followed inItaly , Switzerland (Ovronnaz-Martigny Basket; Université BC Neuchâtel ), Hungary and Croatia.

From 2009 she played again in her Finnish homeland, initially in Espoo . In 2011 she ended her career in Forssa . The 182 cm tall Moua was used as a power forward and center . She played 124 full internationals for Finland. In 2004 and 2005 she was Swiss champion with Ovronnaz-Martigny Basket, and in 2005 Swiss cup winner with the same team. In 2007 she also won the Croatian Cup with ŽKK Gospić.

After the sport

After her basketball career, Michaela Moua worked for various non-governmental organizations in Finland that fight racism and discrimination. B. for the Helsinki Human Rights Foundation. In Vantaa, she coordinated the “Sporttia kaikille” (Sport for All) project, which promoted multicultural activities . She also held several positions of trust, including chairing the Advisory Council on Ethnic Relations in Southern Finland. She was also personally involved against hate speech and shared her own experiences with everyday racism in Finland.

On May 17, 2021, the EU Commission appointed Moua as the first anti-racism officer in its history. For this new post she gave up a job in the Finnish Ministry of Justice. According to the European Commissioner for Equality, Helena Dalli , Moua's appointment implements a commitment from the EU's Action Plan against Racism. In her function, Moua is to work with representatives of minorities as well as with actors from civil society and academia, “in order to strengthen political measures in the field of anti-racism”.
