The Michaelsplatz ( Ukrainian Михайлівська площа / Mychajliwska ploschtscha ) is a square in the center of the Ukrainian capital Kiev . The square is named after the St. Michaelskloster , which towers above the square.

Location and development

The square is located on the Old Kiev Mountain in Shevchenko Raion and is one of the oldest squares in the city.

On the square is the St. Michael's Monastery, which was rebuilt in the 1990s , the monumental building of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry built in the 1930s in the style of socialist classicism , a memorial for the victims of the Holodomor , the monument to Princess Olga, the Holy Apostle Andrew and the Missionaries Cyril and Method as well as the building of the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine built in 1860 . A funicular runs from the northeast of the square to the Kiev district of Podil in the lower town.

Names

From 1937 to 1961 the square was called Government Square, from 1961 to 1977 it was called Soviet Square and from 1977 to 1991 it was called Kalinin Square.
