The Michaelskapelle near Deidesheim is a church building that is consecrated to the Archangel Michael .
location
The chapel is located a little over a kilometer northwest of Deidesheim on the Kirchberg , which belongs to Haardt , the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest . It stands on an approx. 80 m high, east-facing ledge of the Kirchberg. The Heidenlöcher are located on the mountain top itself, about 350 m west of the chapel .
history
The first construction of the chapel dates back to around 1470. This had already collapsed in the 17th century and was rebuilt in 1662/63 under the master mason Michael Ramlau. Funds from various foundations then enabled the building to be preserved until the French Revolution , during which the chapel was destroyed in 1794. Although there were plans to rebuild it as early as the 19th century, it took until 1952 for the chapel to be rebuilt again - this time in its current form. The reconstruction went back to a vow of the citizens of Deidesheim, who wanted to rebuild the chapel if their hometown was spared during the Second World War . Except for one bomb attack that accidentally hit the Deidesheim hospital , Deidesheim remained unscathed during World War II.
building
The core of the chapel is a late Gothic building. The portal in the west of the chapel dates from the first reconstruction in 1662. During the second reconstruction in 1952, the chapel was restored as a simple hall building. The original seven windows of the chapel had tracery , which was removed when it was rebuilt in 1952. The central window of the choir, from the second reconstruction, is a work by Erhardt Klonk .
