Mikhail Georgievich Sakharenko ( Russian Михаил Георгиевич Захаренко ; born March 24, 1947 in the village of Shalinskoje , Krasnoyarsk region ) is a Russian admiral . From 1997 to 2001 he was the commander of the Russian Pacific Fleet and from 2001 to 2007 he was deputy commander in chief of the Russian naval fleet .

Life

Sacharenko comes from the family of a worker. After finishing secondary school, he worked as a steel worker in the Krasnoyarsk Metallurgical Factory. In 1966 he was drafted into the Pacific Fleet for military service. After training in the 51st submarine training group in Vladivostok , he served as a sailor on a diesel-electric submarine of Project 641 . In 1967 he began studying at the SO Makarov Pacific Officers College . In 1972, after graduating from college in Kamchatka, he was appointed commander of the electron navigation group on the nuclear submarine K-389 . He then served on Project 675 submarines as a navigator and officer on watch. In this capacity, he took part in a twelve-month voyage to the Indian Ocean on the nuclear submarine K-189 in 1974. In 1977 he was sent to Leningrad for officers' courses. After graduation, he became chief officer and, from 1980, the commander of a nuclear hunting submarine for the 671RTM project .

From 1984 to 1986, Sakharenko studied at the Grechko Naval War Academy , then became chief of staff of the 45th nuclear submarine division and in 1988 its commander. In this role he was appointed Rear Admiral in 1990 . He graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces in Moscow in 1992 , was then employed as the first deputy commander of the 2nd nuclear submarine flotilla and took over her command from 1994. Sacharenko, who was promoted to Vice Admiral in 1995, became Chief of Staff of the Pacific Fleet in 1996. From July 1997 to July 2001 he was in command of the Pacific Fleet and was promoted to admiral in this role in 1998. From 2001 until his retirement in 2007, he was deployed as deputy commander-in-chief of the Russian naval fleet.
