Mikhail Petrovich Minin
Mikhail Petrovich Minin ( Russian Михаил Петрович Минин ; born July 29, 1922 in Vanino , Pskov Governorate ; † January 10, 2008 in Pskov ) was a soldier in the Soviet Army .
During the Battle of Berlin on the evening of April 30, 1945, he hoisted the first Soviet flag on the Reichstag building . The scene reproduced in the famous photo on May 2, 1945 at the Berlin Reichstag was officially attributed to the Georgian Meliton Kantaria by the Soviets . Minin was only honored by President Boris Yeltsin in 1995 .
After the war, Minin graduated from the Kuibyshev Military Academy for Engineer Troops and served in the Strategic Missile Forces until 1969 , most recently as a lieutenant colonel .
He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner , the Order of the Great Patriotic War (twice), the Order of the Red Star and the medal "For Merit in Combat" and was an honorary citizen of the city of Pskov.
