Michal Plocek (born April 17, 1994 , † November 28, 2016 in Prague ) was a Czech rower .

Career

Michal Plocek started rowing at a young age in 2005. In the U19 age group, he was able to qualify for the single year world championships in 2011 and 2012 . He won the gold medal at the Junior World Rowing Championships in 2012 and was allowed to represent his association at the European Open Age Championships in the course of the following season , where he finished 7th.

Plocek rowed double sculls in 2013 with Jan Andrle , who was also young . The duo gained international experience at the Rowing World Cup , the European Championships and the World Championships without reaching any of the top positions. At the U23 World Championships , however, they won the silver medal behind the representatives from Lithuania. In the following season of 2014, Andrle and Plocek initially rowed together, but they did not perform successfully at the European Championships and the World Cup. Plocek switched to the single for the U23 World Championships and was able to win the gold medal there.

In the pre-Olympic season, Plocek climbed into the double scull with David Jirka . The duo started the season strongly with podiums and finals at the World Cup and the European Championships . In other World Cup participations and the World Championships , however, they were then passed through to the B and C finals and missed the first opportunity to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games at the World Cup . In the following year Plocek tried to row in double sculls with Matyáš Klang . The duo took 9th place at the European Championships , after which they missed the last chance to participate in the Olympics for a place in the qualifying regatta in Lucerne. Plocek then rowed again in the single at the U23 World Championships and won a bronze medal.

In October 2016, Plocek was named a Rising Star by the World Rowing Federation (FISA). At the same time he also took part in the FISA world championships in coastal rowing and won the gold medal in the men's quadruple scull with the team of his home club Dukla Prague . With a height of 1.90 m, his competition weight was around 80 kg.

On the evening of November 28, 2016, Plocek was found dead on the premises of his club. There are no indications of third-party fault, but the circumstances of the death are being investigated by the police.
