Michel-Antoine David

Michel-Antoine David also David l'aîné (* 1707 ; † March 17, 1769 in Paris ) was a French printer , publisher and encyclopaedist in the Age of Enlightenment . He was one of the publishers of the Encyclopédie of French Enlightenmentists .

Live and act

David came from a family of Parisian printers; he was the son of Michel Étienne David. His grandfather was the printer Michel David and his uncle Christophe David (1682–1741). He completed his training from September 1727 to January 1732 with the Parisian printer Claude-Louis Thiboust. On May 2nd, 1732 he became a member of the Paris Booksellers and Printers Guild and on September 1st, 1733 he received his master craftsman's certificate.

He was active as a bookseller from 1732 to 1769, and from 1751 as a publisher. He lived and worked from 1732 to 1769 in various places in Paris, such as rue Saint-Jacques (approx. 1751), rue vis-à-vis la grille des Mathurins (approx. 1762–1764), rue d 'Enfer à Saint Michel (1765) and finally on the quai des Augustines Quai des Grands Augustins (around 1768).

David was one of the four publishers of the Encyclopédie , whose editors were Denis Diderot and Jean-Baptiste le Rond d'Alembert . The other publishers were André-François Le Breton , Antoine-Claude Briasson and Laurent Durand .
