Michel Esdras Bernier PC (born September 28, 1841 in Saint-Hyacinthe , Eastern Canada, now Québec , † July 27, 1921 ) was a Canadian lawyer , businessman and politician of the Liberal Party of Canada , who was a member of the lower house and minister for more than 21 years was in the 8th Canadian Cabinet of Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier .

Life

After attending school, Bernier studied law and then worked as a notary and entrepreneur.

As a candidate for the Liberal Party, he was elected to the House of Commons for the first time in the election of June 20, 1882 , where he represented the St. Hyacinthe constituency in Québec until he voluntarily resigned his seat on February 1, 1904 .

On June 22, 1900, Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier appointed him Minister for Domestic Taxes in Canada's 8th Cabinet. He held this ministerial office until his resignation on January 18, 1904.

After leaving the government and the House of Commons, Bernier was appointed deputy chief commissioner of the Canadian Railways Commission on February 1, 1904. He remained in this post until 1914.
