Michel Pottier (born January 12, 1948 in Cambrai ) is a former French football player and later coach.
Player career
AC Cambrai
In his youth, Pottier played for a club from Corbehem and a lower class club from Douai . In 1972 he was included in the squad of the second division AC Cambrai , where coach Pierre Phelipon relied on Pottier as a Libero . As such, the player took a regular place and was voted the best second division player of the year at the end of the 1974/75 season. Nevertheless, he had to accept relegation to the third division at the same time, but remained loyal to his club. On promotion he failed with the team the following year.
1976 Olympic Games
Although Cambrai had neither a second nor a third division professional status , the then 28-year-old Pottier was appointed to the French squad for the 1976 Olympic Games , in which he was the only amateur player. In a team with players like Michel Platini , he ran in two group games and in the quarterfinals, which resulted in the elimination due to a 4-0 defeat against the eventual tournament winners from the GDR .
FC Tours
Following the Olympic Games, Pottier did not return to Cambrai, but moved to the second division FC Tours . He followed his trainer Phelipon, whose move to Tours was completed in the same year. As before in Cambrai, he initially held amateur status. Therefore, despite his role as a top performer in the second division, the player worked full-time for the police. In 1978 Tours applied for professional status, so that from then on Pottier was considered a professional, even if he was used less and less. After he was promoted to the top French league with the team in 1980, he played a single game in this one. At the end of the 1980/81 season, the 33-year-old footballer who, in addition to his first division appearance, had come to 188 second division games with four goals, decided to end his career.
Coaching career
After retiring, Pottier continued his career in the police force, but also trained as a trainer. He held this office at various lower class clubs. In addition, he was behind Jean Sérafin , who was in charge from 1988 to 1992, for two years assistant coach at Tours FC. He returned there in 2007 when he moved from an amateur club to Tours to take care of the B youths .
