Michel Sardaby (born September 4, 1935 in Fort-de-France , Martinique ) is a French jazz pianist and composer .

Michel Sardaby learned the piano as a five-year-old and played in his father's restaurant in Fort-de-France as a child. He later studied in Paris at the École Boulle , where he obtained a diploma in 1956; afterwards he worked in France as a professional jazz pianist, in the 1960s initially with blues musicians such as Sonny Boy Williamson or T-Bone Walker . In October 1967 he recorded his first album in Paris at the American cultural center: "Five Cat's Blues", which has a legendary reputation among connoisseurs, especially in Japan. All 5 pieces are composed by Sardaby. He is accompanied by 4 musicians from France: Alain Hatot on saxophone, Pierre Dutour trumpet, Henri Tischitz bass and Michel Denis drums. The record was only released in 1969 on the President label.

His 2nd album Night Cap was created in Paris in 1970 with original compositions by the pianist and an interpretation of Duke Ellington's "Satin Doll"; his companions were Percy Heath and Connie Kay . In 1974 the album Gail was created , on which the bassist Richard Davis and the drummer Billy Hart participated; Sardaby played both acoustic and Fender Rhodes piano on the album . For the album Sardaby was awarded the Prix ​​Boris Vian in 1976.

In 1985 he formed a duo with Monty Alexander ( Caribbean Duet ). From the 1990s Sardaby took a number of albums for the Sound Hills label ; thus in 1992 a quintet a. a with Ralph Moore the album Straight On . In the 2000s he recorded At Home - A Tribute to My Father and Night in Paris .

In the course of his career, Sardaby has also played with US musicians such as Kenny Clarke , Dexter Gordon , Dizzy Gillespie , Bill Coleman , Johnny Griffin , Clark Terry , Dee Dee Bridgewater , Art Farmer and Philly Joe Jones . According to authors Richard Cook and Brian Morton , Sardaby's playing is influenced by John Lewis and Martial Solal .
