Michele Arnaboldi (born July 1, 1953 in Ascona ) is a Swiss architect and university professor.

Life

After studying (1972 to 1979) and graduating from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich , Michele Arnaboldi worked in the office of Luigi Snozzi in Locarno from 1979 to 1985 . From 1982 to 1985 he also worked as a university assistant and from 1986 to 1992 as a diploma supervisor for Dolf Schnebli at the ETH Zurich. In 1985 Arnaboldi opened his own architecture office in Locarno, where he still works today.

In 1994 Arnaboldi was visiting professor at Washington University in St. Louis (USA), from 2002 to 2009 he taught at the architecture school of the University of Italian-speaking Switzerland in Mendrisio, and since 2009 he has been a professor at this university.

Alongside Raffaele Cavadini, Michele Arnaboldi is one of the most important representatives of the young generation of the "Ticino School". In his design attitude, Arnaboldi demonstrates a close proximity to the work of Luigi Snozzi. He, too, does not see any autonomous objects in his geometrically clear buildings, which are often made of exposed concrete . Rather, the building for a specific location and the resulting relationship between the building and its context are of central importance for Arnaboldi's projects.

Raiffeisenbank in Intragna, 2002

The Raiffeisenbank in the Ticino village of Intragna (2001–2002) is an example of the integration of a decidedly modern exposed concrete architecture in a historically grown, village context: on the outside, the composition of exposed concrete and quarry stone walls made of Maggia granite lives from the tension-rich joining of these materials. With their different formats, windows flush with the facade break through the exposed concrete outer skin and underline its clear geometry. Inside the cubic bank building there are also walls made of exposed concrete, which Arnaboldi complements with white plastered walls.
