Michele Francesco Buttigieg ( English Michael Franciscus Buttigieg ; born November 3, 1793 in Qala , Gozo , † July 12, 1866 in Rabat , Gozo) was a Maltese Roman Catholic clergyman and the first bishop of Gozo .

Life

He was ordained a priest on December 21, 1816 and became archpriest of the Collegiate Church of Gozo.

Pope Pius IX appointed him on March 16, 1863 titular bishop of Lete and auxiliary bishop in Malta for Gozo. He received his episcopal ordination on May 3, 1863 in the Roman church of Santissima Trinità Montecitorio Niccola Cardinal Paracciani Clarelli ; Co-consecrators were the archbishops Salvatore Nobili Vitelleschi and Alessandro Franchi .

On September 22, 1864, Pope Michele appointed Francesco Buttigieg as the first bishop of Gozo. He solemnly took possession of the cathedral in Gozo on Sunday, October 23, 1864. Two years later he died in the episcopate and was buried in Rabat Cathedral.
