Michele Gordigiani (born May 25, 1835 in Florence , † October 7, 1909 there ) was an Italian portrait painter.

Life

Michele Gordigiani was a son of the composer Luigi Gordigiani . He completed his training in Florence and oriented himself towards Luigi Mussini . After completing his studies, he opened a portrait studio in Florence. In 1861 he became the official portrait painter of the Kingdom of Italy, in 1865 he became a knight and member of the academy in Florence. Michele Gordigiani's son Eduardo also became a painter. A plaque commemorates the painter on Gordigiani's house at Piazzale Donatello 25 in Florence.

Works

King Chulalongkorn of Thailand

There are several works by Gordigiani in London's National Portrait Gallery ; at least one other belongs to the collection in the Galleria Rinaldo Carnielo in Florence. In the church art museum of San Francesco in Greve in Chianti there is a picture of St. Rose that is attributed to Gordigiani. A portrait of Andrea Maffei can be seen in Riva on Lake Garda . It came from the Maffeis collection, which he bequeathed to the de Lutti family.

In 1867 he portrayed Queen Victoria and Prince Consort Albert in London. In 1897 the Thai king had Gordigiani paint himself during a visit to Europe.

Michele Gordigiani's daughter Giulietta married the Berlin banker Robert von Mendelssohn and became the mother of Eleonora and Francesco von Mendelssohn . During the National Socialist era, Eleonora von Mendelssohn managed to have two copies of pictures made by her grandfather, which were then attributed to Rembrandt , deposited in Germany instead of the originals and to bring the real pictures to Basel. After a cousin protested, fearing that the exchange might be discovered, the valuable paintings were returned to Germany. Gordigiani's daughter later felt compelled to sell the two originals, which have not returned to the family's possession to this day.
