Michiel Coxcie (born March 5, 1499 in Mechelen , † March 10, 1592 there ) was a Flemish painter .

Life

Michiel Coxcie was first a pupil of Bernard van Orley in Brussels . Then he went to Italy and was commissioned in Rome in 1531 to paint the frescoes of the Barbara chapel in the church of Santa Maria dell'Anima . He carried out this work in the style of Raphael . In 1539 he returned to Mechelen and became a member of the local Luke guild . After van Orley's death in 1541 he became court painter to the regent Maria of Hungary , for whom he decorated the Binche Castle . Thereupon he was also promoted by Emperor Charles V. He also became court painter to Philip II of Spain , after he had copied a famous altarpiece by the van Eyck brothers in Ghent , The Adoration of the Lamb , for him. The Duke of Alba also gave Coxcie his protection and once protected him from insults by Spanish soldiers in Mechelen. A fall from the stairs of the Antwerp town house, where he was busy doing wall paintings, caused his death, which took place in Mechelen in 1592.

Coxcie was a very prolific painter. In his work there are portraits, history pictures, church panels and frescoes. In his religious representations, Coxcie combined Flemish realism with Raphael's world of forms. He also made designs for glass paintings and carpets.
