Michiel van der Klis
Michiel Baldur Maximiliaan van der Klis (born June 9, 1953 in The Hague ) is a Dutch astrophysicist .
career
Van der Klis received his doctorate in 1983 from the University of Amsterdam with Ed van den Heuvel on the observation of X-ray binary stars . As a post-doctoral student he was at ESTEC in Noordwijk . In 1989 he became an assistant professor at the University of Amsterdam, where he received a full professor in 1993. He works at the university's "Anton Pannekoek" astronomical institute, where he was director from 2005 to 2010. From 2010-2015 he was an academy professor at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (KNAW) .
Klis is the discoverer of the first X-ray pulsar with periods in the millisecond range - it rotates at 400 revolutions per second.
In 1984 he also discovered the phenomenon of quasi-periodic oscillations in the X-ray spectrum of X-ray binary stars (QPO) on the ESA's EXOSAT research satellite . The phenomenon was then a very active field of research, as it originates from the inner edge of the accretion disk around compact objects such as black holes or neutron stars and allows insights into their dynamics and general relativistic effects .
