The Nagasaki fish ( Microcanthus strigatus ( Gr .: “Micros” = small + “akantha” = thorn + Latin : strigatus = striped)), called Stripey in Australia , is a small marine fish that is disjoint in the western and central Pacific on the coast of China and Japan, Hawaii , Australia (not on the coast of South Australia) and New Caledonia .
features
The high-backed, 16 to 20 centimeters long fish are similar to the yellow-tailed steerable perch ( Atypichthys latus ) living further south . They have a yellow, sometimes whitish-yellow base color with broad, dark vertical stripes that are slightly curved upwards above the head. Dorsal, anal, pectoral and pelvic fins are yellow, the caudal fin is yellowish transparent.
Way of life
The Nagasaki fish live in large schools on rocky, algae-covered reefs and in the transition zone to coral reefs at depths of 2 to 20 meters and feed on zooplankton , other small invertebrates and algae.
Systematics
The species was by the French naturalist 1831 Georges Cuvier as Chaetodon strigatus described and by the English zoologist 1839 William Swainson in the monotypic genus Microcanthus asked. Kuiter separates the Nagasaki fish that live from eastern Australia to New Caledonia as Microcanthus joyceae (Whitley, 1931) and the western Australian population as Microcanthus vittatus (Castelnau, 1873) from Microcanthus strigatus . They differ slightly in the striped pattern of Microcanthus strigatus , the latter is also said to be larger than the two Australian populations.
