Middle of the Road is a Scottish band that was particularly successful in the first half of the 1970s with memorable pop songs in Europe.

history

Lead singer Sally Carr (born March 28, 1945), drummer Ken Andrew (born August 28, 1947), guitarist Ian Lewis Campbell (real name Ian McCredie, born July 15, 1948) and on bass his brother Eric Lewis Campbell (real name Eric McCredie, * July 17, 1945; † October 6, 2007) from Glasgow founded the band on April 1, 1970. Before that they played in 1967 as "Karen and the Sofisticats", from 1968 as "Part Three" and then in Latin American guise as "Los Caracas" together.

Since they had no success in their home country Scotland or in England , the group moved to Italy in 1970 . There she met the music producer Giacomo Tosti, who gave the band the distinctive sound and helped them achieve their international breakthrough.

In April 1971 the band had their first world hit with Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep , which is now one of the best-known pop classics of the 1970s. Before the author Lally Stott left the song Middle of the Road and also contributed background vocals to its version, he had already released his own recording in Italy and Australia, where it reached the top position of the single charts in June 1971.

Middle Of The Road (1975)

This was followed by nine other hit parade placements by 1973 with Tweedle Dee Tweedle Dum , Soley Soley (1971), Sacramento , Samson and Delilah , Bottoms Up (1972), Kailakee Kailako , Yellow Boomerang , Samba d'Amour and Honey No (1973). In 1974, guitarist Neil Henderson (born February 11, 1953), also from Glasgow and previously with the Bay City Rollers , joined the group, but the sales figures of earlier years were no longer achieved. In 1977 Carr left the band to start a solo career, in 1978 Ken Andrew left the band. Linda Carroll replaced Carr on the vocal post in 1978. In the same year the band broke up in order to reunite in the 1980s for isolated recordings and TV appearances, with Ian McCredie's son Stuart (guitar, drums, programming, vocals) also making his first appearances. In 1987 the album Today was created with the line-up of Ian McCredie, Stuart McCredie, Eric McCredie, Lorraine Fehlberg (vocals) and Peter Wesselmecking (keyboards).

In 1991 the band around Sally Carr and Ken Andrew was founded. In 1994, the middle-of-the-road reincarnation of Ian McCredie followed, who has since claimed the rights to the band name for himself. He was supplemented by Stuart McCredie, Lorraine Fehlberg and the guitarist Jim Keilt. This formation released the album A New Chapter in the same year . Lorraine Fehlberg was replaced in October 2001 by Lorna Bannon-Osborne, who has since been the front woman of Middle of the Road feat. Ian McCredie is. Stephan Ebn has been the drummer of the McCredie formation since 2006 , while Jim Keilt left the band during this time. Former bass player Eric McCredie died on October 6, 2007.

Middle of the Road feat. Sally Carr appeared in the 2000s in the formation of Sally Carr, Kenny McKay (guitar, vocals), Shug Devlin (keyboards), Stewart McEwan (bass) and Ken Andrew. In 2008 Stewart McEwan was replaced by Jacek Jan Komiago after four years together.
