Middledrift ( Afrikaans : Middeldrif ) is a place in the South African province of Eastern Cape (Eastern Cape). It is located in the Raymond Mhlaba parish in the Amathole district .
geography
Middledrift has 2140 inhabitants (2011 census). IsiXhosa is most commonly spoken. The township Esixekweni is to the south and Mfiki to the west. The place is on the Keiskamma River . Nearby cities are King Williams Town about 45 kilometers east-southeast and Alice about 16 kilometers west.
history
Middledrift was founded as Beaconsfield in 1853 . The place was named after its location at a middle fort . Until 1994 it belonged to Homeland Ciskei .
Economy and Transport
Middledrift is on the R63 , which connects the town with Alice and King Williams Town, among others. Almost parallel to this is a freight line that runs from Alice via King Williams Town towards East London and has a train station south of Middledrift.
On the outskirts of the small town there is a detention center ( Middledrift Correctional Facility ). Prisoners are trained here for later professional activities in agriculture.
