The Midschur , Midžor or Midzhur ( Bulgarian Миджур , or Serbian in Cyrillic script Миџор ) is a mountain in the western part of the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina), on the Serbian - Bulgarian border. With a height of 2169 m it has been the highest mountain in Serbia since the independence of Kosovo .
Prior to the early 1990s, tourist access to the top was banned from either side of the border. On the Bulgarian side, the peak can be reached from the village of Gorni Lom in the Vidin province . The Gorni Lom refuge is located about seven kilometers from the village (at 840 meters). There is also another shelter called Midžor. On the east is under the protection of UNESCO located Tschuprene Biosphere Reserve . It is one of the last refuge in Bulgaria for nesting capercaillie. At the foot of the mountain lie the sources of the Lom river on the Bulgarian side and those of Timok on the Serbian side .
The mountain has given its name to Midzhur Peak , its counterpart in Ellsworthland in Antarctica , since 2011 .
