Midsomer Norton is a small town in the west of England in the county of Somerset .
The place in the Unitary Authority Bath and North East Somerset (until 1996 in the county of Avon ) is about 20 km southwest of Bath on the River Somer , which belongs to the Severn river system.
The name inspired Anthony Horowitz to the title of the television series Inspector Barnaby (original title: Midsomer Murders), which is not otherwise connected to the place. He is also mentioned in the song Slow Train by Flanders and Swann .
In the Catholic Church of the Holy Ghost there is an altar structure with a gilded tabernacle from 1794, which comes from Warwick Street Church in London and is a foundation of the Palatinate-Bavarian Elector Karl Theodor .
