Josef Caminada (born August 23, 1937 in Zurich ; † June 20, 2012 ibid) was a Swiss goldsmith and iron sculptor , whose sacred works helped shape the design of Catholic churches in German-speaking Switzerland .

life and work

Growing up in Zurich, Josef Caminada completed an apprenticeship as a goldsmith and the Zurich School of Applied Arts between 1954 and 1958 . Later he trained in iron forging and welding technology. Initially he worked in various workshops in Zurich and Geneva, including Meinrad Burch-Korrodi in Zurich. He was also influenced by his contact with Kurt Aepli . In 1965 Josef Caminada founded his own atelier for jewelry and sacred design. From 1970 to 1991 he worked as a teacher and campaigned for the next generation of professionals. The collaboration with architect Walter Bosshart gave Josef Caminada for the first time the opportunity to design entire sacred spaces with his own elements. From 1971 he received major orders for the interior design of sacred spaces. In 1985 he received the prize of the city of Burgdorf at the international craft exhibition in the jewelry section .

Josef Caminada developed his sacred implements mainly from basic geometric shapes through two- and three-dimensional modifications. Color and shape contrasts create precious stones, wood and enamel . The work of Josef Caminada is characterized on the one hand by the joy of strict and clearly worked out forms and on the other hand by the "emotional design, in which material, colors and structures are decisive."
