History of origin
Mighty River is the first song featured on the soundtrack for the movie Mudbound . In this version it is sung by Mary J. Blige . She can be seen in the film in the role of Florence Jackson, who, together with her husband Hap, runs a farm on the Mississippi River as sharecroppers after the Second World War .
The song was released as an element of the soundtrack in November 2017 by Milan Records.

On December 18, 2017, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the song was in a shortlist of 70 songs from which the nominations for the Best Movie Song category at the 2018 Academy Awards were determined.
