Pictograms (examples)

The Berlin artist collective Migrantas was founded in 2004 in Berlin . The collective dedicates itself to the topics of migration , identity and intercultural dialogue through art , design and social sciences . The central means of expression is the artistic and graphic design of pictograms . The pictograms of Migrantas are similar to the pictograms that can be seen all over the world in public spaces, for example in airports.

For Migrantas, pictograms are the universally understandable, simple and standardized design for conveying iconographic messages; Pictograms do not need a lot of words and are used conventionally and language-independent for concise advertising messages, guidance systems or traffic signs. Pictograms are globalized fonts. Migrantas therefore uses the language of pictograms to depict numerous individual, cultural, socio-economic and political aspects of migration. In order to gain experience, Migrantas organizes and leads workshops in social and cultural associations and organizations that work with migrants. It motivates the participants to show their feelings and their personal confrontations in another cultural area and their everyday experiences in simple drawings and condenses these sketches into pictograms.

The aim is to carry the created pictograms into the public space, this is achieved by means of 'urban actions' in a variety of forms: By posting on urban advertising spaces, animations in digital media of local public transport, by distributing postcards widely or by printing on shopping bags. At the same time, Migrantas is conceiving exhibitions which, with its exhibits, not only present the pictograms created as part of a project, but also all the original drawings by the workshop participants. Public recognition is given to all those who have so far never come to the public with their experiences of immigration and migration.

The members of Migrantas are themselves migrants and conceive their work as a horizontal, non-hierarchical dialogue. The project, which is not self-financed, has organized numerous activities in different European cities since 2004.

Migrantas was awarded the Capital Prize for Integration and Tolerance of the Capital Initiative Berlin in 2011 .
