Miguel Gonçalves Mendes (born September 2, 1978 in Covilhã ) is a Portuguese film director .

Life

He studied international relations at the Technical University of Lisbon for a few semesters and historical archeology at the New University of Lisbon before completing a film degree at the ESTC ( Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema ).

After various theater activities, he founded the film production company Jump Cut in 2002 . His documentary Autografia , about the surrealist painter Mário Cesariny , won an award at the 2006 Doclisboa Film Festival.

For his documentary film José e Pilar ("José and Pilar", 2010) about the Nobel Prize for Literature José Saramago and his wife Pilar del Río , he received various awards. a. three prizes at the Caminhos do Cinema Português film festival in Coimbra . The film was also a box office hit (among the most watched Portuguese films since 2004) and was subsequently released on DVD.
