Michael Szilágyi

Michael Szilágyi (Hungarian Mihály Szilágyi ; * 1400 (?), † 1461 in Constantinople ) was a Hungarian nobleman, Hungarian imperial administrator and Ban of Croatia, Slovenia and Dalmatia.

Michael Szilágyi was related by marriage to Johann Hunyadi through his sister Erzsébet . During the siege of Belgrade in 1456, Michael Szilágyi was appointed captain of the castle and was able to successfully defend the city. After the execution of Ladislaus Hunyadi , the actual heir to the throne of Johann Hunyadi, who died in 1456, Michael Szilágyi was forced by his younger son and leader of Hunyadi's party, Matthias , to elect him as king in 1457.

In January 1458 he was appointed regent by the young king for five years, but resigned in August 1459. His reign was marked by the dispute over power and authority with the king.

In 1460 he was captured by the Turks and, since he did not want to betray the defenses of Belgrade, executed.
