Jakob Buchanan (* 1968 in Viby ) is a Danish jazz musician ( trumpet , flugelhorn ) who has also emerged as a composer .

Career

Buchanan studied trumpet at Det Jyske Music Conservatory between 1996 and 2001 . He has been teaching trumpet and composition at the Royal Danish Academy of Music since 2001 . From 2001 to 2004 and again from 2008 he was part of Klüvers Big Band; with this formation he accompanied Kurt Rosenwinkel , John Scofield , Jon Balke and Kurt Elling .

On his debut album Dream Factory (2005) Buchanan performed his own compositions with a rhythm section and two other winds; for the next albums changed the instrumentation in his sextet. He also released two albums with his own quartet. He also played in Marilyn Mazur's Special4 (two albums) with Thomas Morgan , Julian Argüelles , Andrew D'Angelo , Helge Norbakken , CV Jørgensen , Kurt Wagner ( Lambchop ), Mark Lanegan , Josh Rouse and Sarah Blasko. He can also be heard on albums by Makiko Hirabayashi , Signe Bisgaard, Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard and the Dahlen Baerentzen Project.

His Buchanan Requiem for church choir, big band and soloists premiered in 2012; His Salme Suite to texts by Luther for choir and soloists followed in 2017 . He also composed for the Aarhus Jazz Orchestra and wrote the music for the documentary The Eternal Flyer about the Greenlandic writer and artist Jens Rosing and several short films.

Prizes and awards

In 2008 Buchanan won the Aarhuser Jazzpreis Fork Award . In 2015 he received the Jazz Nyt Prisen . His Buchanan Requiem was named Jazz Release of the Year at the Danish Music Awards in 2016, and himself as a composer.
