Mike Lindup (born March 17, 1959 in London ) is an English keyboardist, percussionist, songwriter and singer and has been working with the funk and pop band Level 42 again since 2005 .

Musical career

Mike Lindup was born in London in 1959 to musical parents. He began composing at the age of three and received his first piano lessons at the age of six. He studied piano, percussion and composition at the Chethams School of Music and participated as a singer in various choirs. He moved to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama , where he expanded his spectrum to include percussion with large orchestras and performed with drums and as a keyboardist in various jazz ensembles and at pop workshops.

In the spring of 1980 he was a founding member of the band Level 42 with funk bassist Mark King and the brothers Rowland ("Boon") Gould and Phil Gould . In the following 15 years he achieved worldwide success as a keyboardist, songwriter and singer for Level 42 and recorded 13 albums with the band, which were sold over 15 million times worldwide.

Changes (1990)

He put his experiences as a songwriter, singer, arranger and producer into practice with the solo album "Changes", released in June 1990. Together with co-producer Calum Malcolm and some musicians he was friends with, including Manu Katché (drums), Pino Palladino (bass) and Dominic Miller (guitar), he produced a collection of melodic, often musically speaking, "Level 42" sounds ballad-like pieces. They are shaped by his own singing style, recorded with several voices, and the typical clear, simple and yet virtuoso way of arranging sound carpet and vocal accompaniment with his keyboards. In the last piece (Paixao) he processes his love for samba - as well as for Brazilian music in general - with some friends from the "London School of Samba". The album was a flop in spite of some quite commercial sounding songs ( Changes, Desire ), and it is now difficult to get hold of.

On October 14, 1994, Mike Lindup played the last live concert with Level 42 at the Royal Albert Hall. Since the end of the collaboration with Mark King, things have calmed down around Mike Lindup. He produced music for commercials (Audi Sport Video [Return of the Four Rings, 1996]) and gave concerts with the Latin jazz band Negrocan (from 1994 to 1998). In 1998 he studied Cuban Popular Music and Dance at the National School of the Arts in Havana, Cuba.

Conversations with Silence (2003)

In November 2003, after four years of work, he released his second solo album "Conversations with Silence", on which he combined classical music with Latin jazz and film music and with some guests (for example with Bosco d'Oliveira, the violinist Steve Tees and the bassist Danny Thompson ) can be heard.

Since July 2000 he has been active as a keyboard player, percussionist and background singer (in Portuguese) for the Da Lata formation , which appears in various clubs and festivals in Europe, the USA, Canada, Japan, South Africa and China.

Return to level 42

In 2005, Mark King brought him back into the band. He replaced the English keyboardist Lyndon Connah. In 2006 they went on tour with »Retroglide«. In 2010 he started the “30th Anniversary Tour” with the band and completed a world tour with the band. In an interview, he said that he came back with more creative ideas. He collected them over the years.

Private

His passion for motorsport is hardly known. For example, he drove a Ferrari 246 GT, a Lotus Elan Sprint DHC and an Audi Sport quattro. His friend Mark Waghorn persuaded him to take part in a race in a Citroën 2CV (better known as the duck), where he finished third in a national championship in 2005. He took part in the annual 24-hour race at Mondello Park Circuit , Ireland, four times . He broke his thumb in an accident in a duck, but it healed well and did not affect his musical career.

As a passionate photographer, he designed the album "Conversations with Silence" himself; his soulful portrayal of Ireland's west coast on the cover and the inlet is convincing. As a hobby painter, he raised money at an auction for the children's charity Kith and Kids.

Mike Lindup is married to a Dutch woman from the city of Hengelo .
