Michael Anthony Riley (born December 17, 1964 in West Yorkshire ) is an English football referee who directs games in the Premier League , Football League and FIFA .

Career

Riley started as a referee in the Rotherham area in 1980 . In 1994 he became a referee in the Football League and has also been in the Premier League since 1996. He has been a FIFA referee since 1999 and also directs international matches.

The highlights of his career include the 2002 FA Cup final between Arsenal and Chelsea (final score 2-0), which he himself described as "the highlight of my career". In February 2004 he whistled the final of the League Cup between the Bolton Wanderers and Middlesbrough FC. At the 2004 European Championships in Portugal, Riley led the preliminary round games Sweden against Bulgaria and Latvia against Germany.

In 2007 he was invited by the Hong Kong Football Association to whistle the cup final there. In the match between South China and Happy Valley (final score 3: 1) he imposed three penalties.
