Mike Tully

Mike Tully (actually: Michael Scott Tully ; born October 21, 1956 in Long Beach , California ) is a former American pole vaulter .

He won the World Cup in Athletics in 1977 in Düsseldorf and 1979 in Montreal . After he had not succeeded in a valid attempt at the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1983 , he won the Pan American Games in Caracas shortly afterwards .

In 1984 he won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles , and in 1987 he managed to defend his title at the Pan American Games in Indianapolis . He missed participation in the 1988 Olympic Games because he suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in the US eliminations .

In 1977, 1979 and 1986 he became national champion. As a student at the University of California, Los Angeles , he won the 1978 indoor and outdoor NCAA championships. In 1984 he set three US records.
