Michael "Mike" Fraser Weir (born March 24, 1957 in Arbroath ) is a Scottish politician of the Scottish National Party . He was a Member of the House of Commons from 2001 to 2017 .

Life

Born in Arbroath, Weir received his education at the local Arbroath High School . This was followed by a study of law at the University of Aberdeen . He graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Laws . After graduating, he completed his practical training in Montrose and then worked as a solicitor in Kirkcaldy before settling in Brechin . Weir is married and has two daughters.

Political career

Weir started getting involved in politics early on. During his studies he was chairman of the Scottish Nationalist Association at Aberdeen University. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Young Scots for Independence , the youth organization of the Scottish National Party. Between 1984 and 1988 Weir was a member of the Angus District Council . In the 2001 general election , he ran in the Angus constituency as the successor to his fellow party member Andrew Welsh as a candidate for the seat in the lower house. He prevailed with 35.3% of the votes cast against the second-placed candidate of the Conservative Party , Marcus Ashley William Booth. In the legislative period that lasted until 2005 , Weir was his party's trade and labor policy spokesman and was a member of the Scottish Affairs Committee . In the 2005 election he was re-elected with 33.7%. In his second term in office he was, among other things, the environmental policy spokesman for his party. He was also a member of the Innovation Committee between 2005 and 2009 and of the Energy and Climate Change Committee from 2009 to 2010 . In the 2010 elections and 2015 Weir kept his mandate for Angus.
