Player career
The beginnings
Mike Zonneveld was discovered early on by the scouts of the Dutch record champions Ajax Amsterdam . With his parents' permission, he left home and moved to the renowned Ajax boarding school. There he was considered a great talent for years, but was never called up to the first team. For this reason, the defender decided in 1999 to leave the club and play for the second division Go Ahead Eagles . There he came in his first professional season on two goals in 18 games. He then went to the first division club NEC Nijmegen for which he was regularly active for four years.
Breda and PSV
In the summer of 2004, Zonneveld went to league rivals NAC Breda . In his first season there he scored four goals in 20 games, but in the second year the midfield all-rounder was thrown back from a serious injury in his development and only made five appearances in which he scored once. He achieved his final breakthrough as a leading player in 2006/2007 when he scored six goals in 31 games and was signed by the reigning champions PSV Eindhoven after the season . There he signed a four-year contract. In the 2009/10 season he was awarded to FC Groningen . For the 2010/11 season he moved to AEL Limassol in Cyprus , but returned to the Netherlands in May 2011. After keeping fit for a few weeks at NAC Breda, the veteran received a new contract for two seasons from his old club. Due to persistent injuries, he ended his active career in January 2013.
