The Mikkelsen Islands ( French Îles Mikkelsen ) are a group of small islands off the west coast of Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula . The largest and highest island in the group is Skart Island .
Participants in the Fifth French Antarctic Expedition (1908-1910) under the direction of Jean-Baptiste Charcot discovered it. Charcot named it after Otto H. Mikkelsen, a Norwegian diver who found the damaged hull of the research vessel Pourquoi Pas? inspected on December 8, 1908 not far from the Norwegian whaling station on Deception Island .
