Mikkjel Fønhus

Mikkjel Fønhus (actually Mikkel Arnesen Fønhus , born March 14, 1894 in Sør-Aurdal , † October 28, 1973 ibid) was a Norwegian writer .

Life

Fønhus was the son of Arne Mikkelsen Fønhus and his wife Olava Olsdatter Storsveen . The parents ran a retail business. Arne Fønhus died in 1896 and his wife raised Mikkel and his younger brother alone. Mikkel Fønhus graduated from high school in 1913 at a private school in Kristiania . Fønhus worked briefly as a journalist

He broke off his law studies early and returned to his hometown. There he began to write stories, which he initially published in magazines. His debut novel Skoggangsmand was published in 1917 and was highly praised by Johannes V. Jensen . He had his breakthrough with the following book Der vildmarken suser (1919), which was also published in German in 1928, as well as Det skriker fra Kverrvilljuvet (1920) and Troll-Elgen (1921). Troll-Elgen was also translated into German in 1926 and filmed in 1927. During the Nazi era , over 400,000 copies of the book were printed in Germany. Fønhus himself traveled to Germany in 1937, where he visited the Nordic Society and gave lectures.

In total, Fønhus published 41 books in 56 years, which were regularly printed as first editions of 15,000 copies. He received several prizes, including Mads Wiel Nygaards legat 1965 (with Einar Skjæraasen ) and Gyldendals legat 1952 (with Jakob Sande ). In 1963 he was awarded the Royal Medal of Merit in Gold .

Fønhus died in 1973 while hiking near his hometown.

Fønhus is best known as a nature poet. A large part of his fabrics come from his home region of Valdres . Fønhus had been an avid hunter and angler since he was a teenager , and was well versed in nature. He spent a lot of time in the woods of his homeland. Some books also deal with experiences on his travels to Africa , Canada and Svalbard . These include Løvene i Kilimatui , which was also published in German, as well as Urskogene , Under polarlys and Ontarioskogen . Fønhus' language was influenced by the local dialect.
