description

The milk-white man's shield grows loosely as a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of between 3 and 15 centimeters. The parts of the plant are bare (only a few eyelashes on the tips of the leaves). The linear foliage leaves are entire, 10 to 25 millimeters long and about 2 millimeters wide.

The long-stalked inflorescence is golden and consists of three to five flowers. The bare flower stalks are 4 (6) inches long. The crown is white with a yellow throat. The corolla lobes are clearly outlined. The flowering period extends from May to July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 76.

Occurrence

The limestone plant grows on stone corridors and stony lawns. It is distributed in Austria in the federal states of Lower and Upper Austria, Styria, Carinthia, Tyrol and Salzburg. It is widespread from the subalpine to the alpine altitude level .

In Germany only in the south of Bavaria and on the Swabian Alb. According to the Red List of Endangered Plants in Germany, the species is endangered (3).

Locations and distribution in Central Europe

The milk-white man's shield needs a lime-rich substrate. It inhabits crevices and ledges, and more rarely very rocky, steep lawns. It is a Potentilletalia caulescentis order character and occurs mainly in societies of the Cystopteridion fragilis or the Seslerion albicantis association.

It occurs rarely in the Central Swiss Jura, sporadically in the Swabian Jura, as well as in the western chains of the Southern and Northern Limestone Alps; it is rare in the eastern chains of the Limestone Alps, but scattered in the eastern part of the Alps. He prefers heights between about 600 to 2000 m.

The sites outside the Alps are to be regarded as relict sites from the Ice Age .
