The milk bar Norderney is a restaurant and monument on the North Sea island of Norderney . The building is located on the north-western outskirts, where Kaiserstraße and Damenpfad converge.

history

The Berlin newspaper publisher August Scherl had the building erected in what was then the "newspaper district" of Norderney in 1910, which included the Braamsche beach library with reading room and the Ullstein publishing house. The freestanding pavilion served as a book and newspaper shop with reading facilities at the same time. The building fulfilled this task until 1935, when a café was set up in the pavilion. From 1945 to 1951 this was the "tea and coffee room" for the British soldiers of the Rhine Army . The soldiers were in the "Leave Center" on Norderney, which had been set up in May 1945, to relax. From 1935 to 1996 the “Milchbar am Meer” was run in two generations by the Focke Albers family and in 1952 an annex was added as a restaurant and publicly accessible toilet facilities . Until the 1970s, the milk bar mostly offered dairy products from the cows grazing on the eastern part of the island. During this time, rice pudding was very popular and the milk bar is known for this to this day. In 1996 the Brune family took over the pavilion.

In the course of the renovation of the promenade around the western head of the island between 2001 and 2007, baffles were built on the lake side. The notch system on Kaiserstraße was brought up to the entrance area of the pavilion and raised. The building itself was renovated and rebuilt in 2006 due to damage to the structure. With an all-round glazed porch, further areas of the building were created that are located on the promenade and closer to the sea. The publicly accessible toilet facility was also modernized.

Todays use

After the takeover by the Brune family, the catering concept in the restaurant was transformed into a bar and lounge with self-service. In the summer months, music events and open-air concerts take place in the outdoor area of the milk bar on the beach promenade . The musicians Blank & Jones appear there regularly and publish compilations under the name Seaside Season with the Norderney milk bar as a theme and album cover. Stylistically, these albums are about chill-out and lounge music . The in-house merchandise is also sold in the milk bar .

architecture

The milk bar is built in the tradition of a Greek round temple ( tholos ). The wall that frames the circular floor plan was originally almost entirely dissolved in glass. The two doors and the rectangular windows took up the entire height of the pavilion wall. This wall was surrounded by eight columns, some of which have been removed by later additions. The high conical roof with a striking roof pommel created by Bruno Paul has given way to a flat conical roof. The lower roof offers less exposure to storm and rain, which is of considerable importance due to the location of the building directly on the sea.
