A milk delivery service is a delivery service that primarily delivers milk and dairy products . The suppliers of milk were also known as the milkman , milk boy or milk maid . The daily service provided by these people, who drove to residential buildings in delivery trucks and delivered the milk, was part of everyday culture for a long time, especially in England and the USA. This was necessary because dairy products spoiled quickly before the invention and spread of refrigerators and preservation methods such as pasteurization . Therefore, mostly only the needs for one or two days were delivered or bought.

To this day there is a daily delivery of milk in some places, such as London. However, the market share is falling steadily: in 1980 milkmen supplied 89% of the milk consumed in British households, this share fell to 27% by the year 2000 and was only 3% in 2015. In Germany, school milk is sometimes supplied to schools with public funding .

The local supply of milk is otherwise nowadays mostly done by self-purchase in Western countries and, to a much smaller extent, as part of the supply of delivery services from supermarkets and online supermarkets . In addition, some farms, for example in Germany, sell milk as direct marketing. To a large extent, milk is sold in disposable packaging , even if the advantages of reusable milk bottles are often emphasized from the point of view of environmental friendliness. Consumers often prefer disposable containers because they are lighter than glass bottles and therefore easier to carry.

In the 21st century, milk deliveries to private homes are sometimes marketed , for example in Manhattan or Basel, as part of a new movement for sustainability and ecology, or interpreted as a new type of entrepreneurship .

In India it is still common today to have the milk delivered by the milkman. Freshness is particularly important in the warm Indian climate, especially since refrigerated vehicles are rarely used.
