The Hanau military high court was the place of execution for the Hanau garrison in the early modern period .

Geographical location

The place of execution was in the north of the new town of Hanau , in front of the bridge that led over the moat in the old town. Today, this roughly corresponds to the area in front of the authority building on Freiheitsplatz .

history

The “civil” place of execution for Hanau was in the district of Hanau-Kesselstadt , between Kesselstadt and Dörnigheim , on the highway to Frankfurt and within sight of the Philippsruhe Palace, which was built at the beginning of the 18th century . There was also a gallows here . In 1834 the facility was demolished and replaced by the Hanau Supreme Court .

However, the military of the Hanau garrison needed its own gallows for its military jurisdiction because it wanted to separate itself from civil jurisdiction. This already existed in 1595, as the oldest surviving view of the city of Hanau by Abraham Saur in his Theatrum Urbium shows. From 1674 there are archives of negotiations between the two cities of Hanau and the military, which deal with the (new) erection of the gallows, which was then built in 1680 at the traditional location. In 1696, 1715, 1729 and 1745 the gallows, a wooden construction, had to be rebuilt. Apparently, there was seldom hanged: What is certain is that it was not used between 1715 and 1729.

When the gallows was removed is not documented. At the latest when Hereditary Prince Wilhelm (IX./I.) Of Hessen-Kassel had the early modern city fortifications torn down and the dividing trenches filled in as part of a generous redesign of the area between the new and the old town of Hanau in 1768–1779 The gallows were also removed.
