The military medal ( Spanish Medalla Militar ) is a Spanish military bravery award , which on June 29, 1918 by Alfonso XIII. King of Spain was donated in one stage. Since then, it has been awarded to members of the Spanish Armed Forces and, under the same conditions, to foreigners for outstanding performance before the enemy, regardless of rank .

Appearance and wearing style

The medal in its first form had a diameter of mm 42, the present measures 37 mm. On her obverse, in a 25 mm diameter central field, it shows a female figure with angel wings, reminiscent of the goddess Victoria . She supports herself with her left hand on a shield with a central lion head. She is holding a laurel wreath in her right hand. All the symbolism plays on the shore of a sea whose horizon is just setting the sun. The manufacturer's name Egana is embossed in the waves of the sea . The edge of the medal forms a cartouche that shows two lions on the side and in the upper middle a fortress from the coat of arms of Spain. These symbols are linked by a wreath of laurel leaves on the left and oak leaves on the right, both of which are united on their lower side in a banner. It reads AL VALOR MUY DISTINGUIDO (For extraordinary bravery). The lapel shows the unchanged edge of the medal as on the front. Instead of the inscription on the obverse, however, the banner is empty and is subsequently engraved with the reason for the award. In the middle you can see the coat of arms of Spain, which is depicted in front of a St. John's eagle with a halo. To the left and right of the eagle are the two Hercules columns. Under the right column a star-shaped object can be seen that reminds of the symbol of the Falange (yoke and arrows). The company name can be found under the left column.

The medal was worn on the upper left side of the chest of the borrower on an initially 28 mm, today 35 mm wide white ribbon, the yellow edge of which is 1 mm wide. A red-yellow-red vertical central stripe is woven into the middle of the ribbon, which reflects the national colors. The central red is 4.5 mm wide.
