Mimesa equestris is a hymenoptera fromthe Crabronidae family .

features

The wasp reaches a body length of 6 to 9 millimeters (females) or 5 to 8 millimeters (males). The petiolus has a longitudinal bulge on top. The tibiae are light brown, otherwise the legs are black. The mesopleurs are leathery and have no coarser point-like structure. This distinguishes the species from the similar Mimesa bicolor , whose mesopleurs are shiny.

Occurrence

The species is distributed in Europe north to about the Arctic Circle and Asia, east to Japan. It colonizes various habitats with sandy soils, such as forest edges, dry grassland and ruderal areas, but also occurs in human settlement areas and on soils with clay fractions. The species flies in one generation from early May to September. It is unknown whether a partial second generation occurs. It is widespread in Central Europe and is the most common species of the genus Mimesa .

Way of life

The females lay their nests up to 50 centimeters deep in the ground. The nest comprises several cells that are located at the end of side aisles that branch off from the main aisle. The nests are often found in groups near the roots of lower plants. Small steep walls are also settled. The brood is mostly supplied with dwarf leaf hoppers (Cicadellidae), less often with leaf fleas (Psylloidea). It is believed that Elampus panzeri parasitizes the species as a cuckoo wasp .
